LinkedIn posts have no bold button. Here is how bold text in posts actually works, how to add it free, and why to use it sparingly.
LinkedIn articles and newsletters have a bold button. Regular posts do not: they are plain text. So how do people post bold and italic words?
Unicode, the standard that defines every character your phone can show, includes sets of letters meant for math formulas: bold letters, italic letters, script letters and more. They look like styled text, but to a computer each one is a different character, the way "é" is different from "e".
Paste those characters into a post and they look bold anywhere, because the style is in the characters themselves.
The free LinkedIn text formatter at /tools/linkedin-formatter does the swap for you:
1. Write or paste your post.
2. Select the words you want to stand out and pick bold, italic or bold italic.
3. Turn notes into a list with bullets, numbers, arrows or checks.
4. Check the preview to see where LinkedIn will cut the post with "see more", then copy it.
It runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Use it for a word or a short line that has to stand out. If the whole post is bold, nothing is.
LinkedIn's limit is 3,000 characters. Styled letters can count as two characters each, so leave yourself some room.
