A DUNS number is the foundation of your business credit profile. Here's how to get one free, how long it takes, and what to do the moment it arrives.
A DUNS (Data Universal Numbering System) number is a 9-digit identifier issued by Dun & Bradstreet. It's the cornerstone of your business credit file. Without one, you don't exist in the business credit world. With one, you can start building a credit profile that lets you borrow, get net terms, and look legitimate to vendors, lenders, and government contractors.
The good news: it's free. D&B will try to upsell you on "expedited" processing or paid monitoring products. Ignore them.
Go to **dnb.com/duns-number** and click "Get a D-U-N-S Number." You'll need:
The free registration takes 1–30 business days. D&B will try to sell you a $229+ "Expedited" option. It's never worth it. The free route works.
Most people get their DUNS number within 5–10 business days on the free path. Some wait the full 30. You'll get an email when it's assigned. If you're past 30 days, call D&B directly at 1-844-312-7299.
After 90 days you should have at least 3 trade lines reporting. Your PAYDEX score generates once you have sufficient payment history.
A DUNS number also makes you eligible for federal contracts and grants. SAM.gov registration (required for government contracting) requires it. Large corporations also use it to vet vendors.
The business credit system is a game. This is how you buy your first chip.
