How to Start Automated Trading: A Beginner's Honest Guide

Automated trading sounds complex. It doesn't have to be. Here is the honest path for someone starting from zero.

The Honest Starting Point

Most "beginner' guides to automated trading skip the part where they tell you that most retail traders lose money — automated or not. Let's start there.

**The data:** Roughly 70–80% of retail traders underperform a simple index fund over a 3-year period. Automation doesn't fix bad strategy. It executes bad strategy faster.

This isn't a reason not to explore automated trading. It's a reason to start with paper trading, understand the system, and size positions appropriately.

Step 1: Choose Your Asset Class

**Stocks:** Trade 9:30am–4pm ET, Monday–Friday. More regulated, more predictable, but limited hours.

**Crypto:** 24/7. More volatile. Higher potential gains and losses. Less regulated.

**Both:** Some platforms (Enki) run both from one interface with separate treasury buckets.

Start with one. Learn the behavior of that market before adding complexity.

Step 2: Paper Trade First

Paper trading = simulated trading with fake money. Every serious automated trading platform offers it.

Run your system in paper mode for at least 30 days before touching real capital. This is not optional. Anyone who tells you to skip paper trading is selling something.

What to measure in paper trading:

  • Win rate (percentage of trades that are profitable)
  • Average win vs. average loss (is your average win bigger than your average loss?)
  • Maximum drawdown (what's the worst losing streak?)
  • Sharpe ratio (return relative to risk — higher is better)
  • Step 3: Start Small

When you go live, start with an amount you can afford to lose entirely. This isn't pessimism — it's correct position sizing.

If you have $10,000 to eventually deploy, start with $500. Get comfortable with how the system behaves with real money. Slippage, fees, and emotional responses to real losses all behave differently than paper trading.

Step 4: Understand Your Risk Rules

Every automated system needs hard stops:

  • Maximum daily loss (if the bot loses 3% today, it stops trading)
  • Position size limits
  • Sector concentration limits (don't let crypto eat your whole portfolio)
  • Enki's Fortress Guard handles this automatically. If you're building your own, these rules are non-negotiable before going live.

    Step 5: Review, Don't Interfere

Automated trading only works if you let it run. The biggest mistake retail traders make is overriding the system every time it has a bad day.

Set a review schedule — weekly or monthly — to assess overall performance. Don't stare at positions in real time. It leads to bad decisions.
