The hook is the most important sentence you will write. Everything after it depends on whether the first line worked.
Every social media platform has changed dramatically over the past five years. But one thing hasn't: you still have about 1.5 seconds to convince someone not to scroll past.
The hook — your opening line, your first sentence, the text above "read more" — determines whether anyone sees the rest.
**Curiosity gap:** Imply there's information they're missing. "Most creators skip this step and then wonder why they're stuck at 1,000 followers."
**Contradiction:** Challenge a belief the reader holds. "Posting more frequently is not why accounts grow."
**Specificity:** Vague hooks get ignored. Specific hooks create credibility. "We went from 0 to 12,000 followers in 90 days. Here's the exact posting schedule we used."
**Pattern interrupt:** Say something they didn't expect. "Your best-performing post is probably three years old."
**Direct promise:** Tell them exactly what they'll get. "7 caption templates you can use today — copy, paste, and post."
**X/Twitter:** Start mid-thought. Drop them into the action. Don't start with "I" or "So" or "Today I want to talk about."
Bad: "So I've been thinking about social media growth and wanted to share some thoughts."
Good: "Every account that breaks 10k has one thing in common. And it's not posting frequency."
**LinkedIn:** More professional, but still needs tension. Start with a counterintuitive statement or a data point.
**Bluesky:** Conversational hooks work. Ask a genuine question or share a hot take you're willing to defend.
**Mastodon:** Community-first hooks land better. "Does anyone else notice..." or "Unpopular opinion in this community..."
Keep a running list of hooks that made you stop scrolling. Not to copy — to understand the pattern. What created the gap? What created the curiosity? Your own version of that pattern is your best next hook.
SocialMate's Hook Generator tool takes your content idea and generates 5–10 hook variations for you to choose from. It's not about outsourcing your voice — it's about having options so you can pick the sharpest one instead of going with the first line you wrote.
The best hook you write is usually the fourth or fifth version.
