Social Media Analytics — What Metrics Actually Matter

Vanity metrics look good in screenshots. These are the numbers that actually tell you if your strategy is working.

The Vanity Metric Trap

Follower count. Total impressions. Total likes. These numbers feel good. They're also mostly meaningless for understanding whether your content strategy is working. The creators who grow consistently track different numbers.

Engagement Rate (Not Raw Engagement)

100 likes on a post sounds good — unless you have 50,000 followers, in which case 0.2% engagement rate is poor. Engagement rate (interactions ÷ reach × 100) adjusts for audience size and lets you compare posts fairly. A 3–5% engagement rate is strong. Above 5% is excellent.

Click-Through Rate on Links

If you're using social media to drive traffic somewhere, the only metric that matters is clicks. Not impressions. Not likes. Did someone take the action you asked for?

Follower Growth Rate (Not Follower Count)

Growing from 200 to 250 is 25% growth. Growing from 50,000 to 50,050 is 0.1%. The rate matters more than the absolute number.

Reply and Comment Quality

Not all engagement is equal. A post that sparks 15 genuine conversations is more valuable than 50 "great post!" comments. Look for replies showing people actually read and responded to your content.

Best-Performing Post Topics

Over 30–60 days, look back at which posts generated the most engagement or clicks. Cluster them by topic — you'll almost always find a pattern. Double down on those.
