X/Twitter Posting Strategy in 2026: What Still Works

The platform has changed dramatically. The strategies that grew accounts in 2021 are dead. Here is what actually works now.

X Is a Different Platform Now

The Twitter that existed before 2022 is gone. The algorithm has changed, the verification system has changed, the culture has changed, and the audience composition has changed significantly.

What worked then — high-volume posting, heavy hashtag use, aggressive follower tactics — largely doesn't work now or actively hurts you.

What the Current Algorithm Rewards

X's current algorithm (as of 2026) prioritizes:

**Engagement velocity.** Posts that get likes, replies, and reposts quickly after publishing get shown to more people. The first 30 minutes after posting matter most.

**Replies over likes.** A post with 50 replies outranks one with 500 likes in terms of algorithmic distribution. Controversial, thought-provoking, or question-based content gets replies.

**Long-form content.** Threads and longer posts (post+ subscribers can write more) get more distribution than short posts. The algorithm has shifted to favor content that keeps people on the platform.

**Consistency.** Accounts that post regularly maintain more algorithmic goodwill than accounts that post in bursts.

What Doesn't Work Anymore

  • Heavy hashtag use (2–3 max, maybe zero)
  • Pure promotional content (gets suppressed)
  • Posting links in the main post (put them in replies)
  • Buying followers (kills your engagement rate)
  • Posting Links Effectively

X suppresses posts that contain outbound links — they don't want users leaving the platform. The workaround: post your main content without a link, then reply to your own post with the link. This gets significantly more distribution.
